Historical Background of Ngong Hills
Enkong’u, as it was previously called, is a Maasai word that refers to the mountain of Laiser.
The name Ngong was given by Joseph Thompson back in 1887 as he was travelling to Uganda with his entourage, and while camping at the hills, because he found it difficult to pronounce it like the locals, he simply gave it the name.
The Forest Reserve was gazetted in 1981 and is managed by the Kenya Forest Service and the local community.
The magnificent hills are found in Kajiado County, Ngong Sub-county, and it is approximately 30km from Nairobi City.
The hills stretch for about 16km from the Main Gate to the Kona Baridi Gate, with the highest point being about 2465m above sea level.
With its high terrain, it is where Nature and Technology meet to serve humanity in various aspects of recreation and economic needs.
As a result, thirty huge wind masts were set up to produce clean wind power to combat climate change. The power is then fed to the national grid; about 21MW is produced daily.
With a panoramic view advantage at the top of the hill, to the East of the hills lies Nairobi City; on the southern side, Nairobi National Park and Kapiti Plains; on the Western side, the Great Rift Valley passes through; and on the Northern side, the Aberdare Ranges can be viewed together with Mount Suswa.
The mentioned natural beauty makes the hills a distinct wonder of Nature not found anywhere else around the City.
During the early midday, clear skies appear and strong winds dominate, while in the evening the sun can be seen disappearing beneath the Rift Valley.
Evening sunsets can be viewed spectacularly, painting the skies red and violet as the sun disappears, part of this marvellous story of the hills.
Plan a visit and you are assured of having a memorable experience and you will become part of this marvellous story of the hills.
